A recent post on The Verge’s forums by the writer Mike Tippett, a frequent contributor to BleacherReport.com, sparked an interesting conversation.
Tippetts is a writer and editor based in New York, and he’s also the author of The Bizarro World: How to Make the Most of the Biz and the Other Things We Never Know About Stuff We Want to Know about.
He’s been blogging about the intersection of technology, business, and entertainment since 2006.
Here’s an edited transcript of the conversation, which also has an audio version: What is the term Beltway Belt?
Mike: I don’t know if there’s a word that describes it.
It’s a term that I don and it’s something I’ve seen thrown around for a while now that is just totally over the top.
It feels like the equivalent of calling someone a “lion.”
There’s nothing wrong with being a lion, but you can’t use it as an insult.
I feel like this is a term in the mainstream culture that’s being used in a way that is sort of confusing.
The only way to understand it is to ask yourself, “Is this a good thing or a bad thing?”
It is, and I think it’s really important to recognize that.
It may be overused.
But it’s not going to be a problem.
You don’t have to agree with everything that’s happening in the world.
But when it’s used that way, it’s an insult that is very damaging.
If you’re talking about an issue that affects the majority of people in the United States, and it starts with the words “Bike lanes,” that is really a statement of power, right?
I think people have an understanding that you are speaking on behalf of the people that are most impacted by the things that you’re saying, right.
That that’s who you are and what you stand for, and that you want to see happen.
And if you’re doing that, you’re making a huge assumption that is probably going to backfire, and if you don’t address it, you’ll be just being a jerk.
Mike: What I think is so interesting about this is that there’s people who have never seen the word “Bicycle Lane” in a sentence and have never been in a city or lived in a town where there are bike lanes.
But if you’ve never been to a city where there is a bicycle lane, and you see a poster with the word, “Bicycling,” and you’re thinking, “I can’t believe people actually do this,” and then you see the poster who actually does it, then that’s a good sign that people are actually trying to change the world and that this is really happening.
And that people really are working on a lot of things that people actually care about, and this is an example of one of those things.
It shows the kind of people that you see walking around these streets.
The people who really are trying to make a difference, and who are genuinely trying to do something.
What is this idea that we’re all supposed to be driving in an Americanized, post-industrial world?
I know there are some people who say, “Oh, we’re not supposed to drive in an industrialized world.”
That’s a really nice way to define the idea of “America,” but I think the world has changed over time.
And you can actually drive in America and you can get around in America, and so I think that this idea of this post-manufacturing world, that we are driving in this world, is a bit ridiculous.
I think most people would agree that we don’t need to be in an industrial society in order to drive.
And I think in the modern era, we need to move towards a world that is more connected, and we need that connectivity.
So I think we should not define ourselves in terms of a specific culture.
The idea of a “bicycle lane” is just so out of step with how people live in our cities and how people are walking around the streets, and the people who are actually driving on a bicycle are a much bigger part of the population than we thought.
And so I’m not saying that we shouldn’t do things to make people drive less, or that we should just stop trying to get people to drive at all.
I’m just saying that the idea that the bike lanes are the new normal is not true.
I mean, that’s one of the things I find most interesting about the discussion.
I dont know what the actual argument is, but it seems to be, “This is all a good idea, it seems like it would be great if you could drive more safely, and now that we have this technology, you should be allowed to drive more.”
I mean it just seems so disconnected from the reality of
