A new, $30 million highway is in the works, and officials say it could eventually connect the new communities of Southside and Lake Shore Drive in Lake Shore to the new interchange of Highway 12 in Lakeland.
The project is called Highway 12 East, and it’s part of a larger effort to build the $3.3 billion interchange of the I-95 and I-90 corridors that will span more than 1.5 million square feet of land.
The interchange will connect Lakeland and Southside Drive to I-45 and IH-84.
It also will connect Interstate 895 and the IH 82 corridor in Miami-Dade County.
The highway is expected to be completed in 2020, but it won’t be complete until 2021, said Brad McLeod, deputy director of the Lakeland/Lake Shore/Southside Department of Transportation.
It’s unclear when that project will be completed, but officials expect it to be finished by 2021.
They also want to begin construction by 2021, and say they’ll work with contractors to do the final touches later in 2021.
The Lakeland-Lake Shore project, which is also known as Highway 13, will connect Southside to IH 895, the interchange to I2, and the new Lakeland airport to I95.
The highway will connect to the I5 and I90 corridor in Lake County.
Highway 12 East is not part of that plan, but a similar project is being planned by the state Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
The new interchange is the result of a $6.5 billion state highway program that includes more than $1 billion in new funding for road projects.
The money will help pay for the project’s construction, as well as pay for maintenance and other costs.
The state also has a $2.3 million grant for road repairs and improvements.
The plan calls for the interchange and highway to be built along the northbound lanes of I-35.
It would be built east of I85 in Lakeport, and then along I-75 in Lakeside, the two-lane highway from Lakeland to Miami.
The new interchange would then connect to I90.
McLeod said the highway would connect to a new interchange in Lakeville, just north of Miami-Hialeah International Airport.
He said the interchange would connect with a new highway in Lake Worth, and possibly a highway in other parts of Lakeland, as soon as 2021.
