The new NSW road rules mean all drivers on NSW’s Highway 1 and 2 are required to wear face masks while on the road.NSW’s Transport Minister, Andrew Constance, said the new rules will help reduce the number of fatalities on the state’s roads.
“We’re very pleased that the Government has put forward new road rules that include a new helmet policy,” Mr Constance said.
“The goal is to make road safety a priority and ensure all drivers are wearing helmets when they drive.”
He said the rules will be rolled out in stages, starting with drivers travelling on NSW roads.
Ahead of the new road regulations being rolled out, Mr Constances announcement said the NSW Government was working to provide a uniform helmet policy for all road users.
He said he wanted to see the helmet policy being rolled-out by December 2019.
“I think this is a good starting point for us to get this policy rolling as quickly as possible, and to ensure that everybody is wearing a helmet,” Mr Stokes said.
Mr Constance says he’s already seen significant improvements in helmet use.
“There are fewer and fewer deaths on NSW roadways and in the last five years, we’ve seen a significant reduction in the number that do occur on NSW highways,” he said.
He says he hopes to see road safety improved for all New South Wales drivers.
“If you’ve got a helmet on and you’ve been on the roads and you’re able to avoid those deaths, you’re doing the right thing,” he told reporters.
“And I think that’s the key to the whole policy, is it’s a uniform policy for everyone.”
It’s not just about helmets and it’s not a helmet policy that’s just about what you’re wearing.
