The Federal Government is looking at the future of highway patrols across Australia, with the Government now considering how it will manage its $6 billion a year highway funding shortfall.
Key points:The Government is now considering the future as it looks at how to deal with the funding gapThe Government has asked Transport for NSW to conduct an internal review of the way it funds highway patrolsMr Dutton says it would be irresponsible not to look at how it can better manage the funding shortfallThe Federal Government has been under pressure to ensure the funding it provides for the Highway Patrol is maintained, but a report from Transport for the Future (TfFT) says the Federal Government must consider how it is managing the funding gaps and the impact of the Government’s decision to cut $6.5 billion from the Highway Operations Fund.
The Federal Budget will set out its strategy for managing the Highway Operation Fund in 2020-21, but Transport for Australia is already warning that a significant cut could be looming.
The report found the Federal Highway Fund, which is paid to state and territory governments, is now forecast to fall $5.8 billion short of funding the entire budget.
In a statement, TfFT said it is working with Transport for South Australia to determine how the Government will manage the future funding shortfall in the funding formula.
“The Government must ensure that its investment is properly managed to ensure that the Highway Program remains sustainable and that the money is appropriately spent,” the statement said.
“In this regard, TftFT is seeking feedback from Transport Australia, the Federal Transport Commission and other stakeholders.”
Mr Ducker said he wanted to work with Transport Australia and other Commonwealth partners to ensure a more equitable funding formula was in place for the Federal government.
“I think we’re going to get a really, really good outcome from this, and we will work with the Federal Minister of Transport and his team to do that,” he said.
